Belgian national television station VTM reported yesterday that singles have an increasingly hard time getting mortgages. The average single person needs to save until the age of 40 in order to even qualify for a loan to buy a house. While it is profoundly tragic that a single person needs to set money aside for about 20 years before he is even allowed to start paying for shelter for the next 30 years, VTM came to a conclusion that missed the bigger picture. Couples still need to save until 36 to get their mortgages, and these numbers apply to people who actually get the green light from their bank. If the eligible lenders need to save for such a long time, how many people néver qualify for a mortgage?
